The gut mycobiome and resistome in health and inflammatory bowel disease

Research Questions/Hypotheses

The fungal resistome in the human gut is influenced by the diet and gut inflammation.

Approach/Methods

The PhD student and PI will analyze stool, oral cavity swabs and endoscopy specimen from a retrospective inflammatory bowel disease cohort comprising patients with active disease (from a biobank) with regard to mycobiome composition and the presence and frequency of azole resistance. Data will be related to available dietary information (previously provided by patients in this cohort) and time of sampling. To corroborate insights gained in this study, the PhD student and PI will perform a prospective study with healthy controls and matched patients with inflammatory bowel diseases over 2 years.
